Chimney Restoration & Gas Fire Upgrade – Thatched Cottage in Over, Cambridgeshire
Project Overview
DSS Heating and Plumbing recently completed a chimney restoration project at a character property in Over, Cambridgeshire. The home, which dates back to the 1800s and features a traditional thatched roof, required careful and respectful work to maintain its original charm.
Our engineer Dean carried out the job using a cherry picker for safe access, avoiding the need to erect scaffolding which could risk damaging the thatch. The chimney’s flue lining was replaced and fresh concrete was applied around the stack’s base to reinforce the structure and weatherproof the area.

Access & External Chimney Work
The thatched nature of the roof meant standard scaffolding wasn't practical or safe for this job. Instead, a cherry picker was used to reach the chimney safely without disturbing the roof structure.
At the top of the chimney, a new pot was installed, and a bird guard cowl was fitted to prevent birds from nesting inside. These additions will reduce future maintenance and protect the system from blockages. The finished work was clean, durable, and sensitive to the building’s historic appearance.

Fireplace Restoration & Safety Testing
Inside the home, the owners had a basket-style gas fire that hadn’t worked in over 20 years. After sourcing a suitable new model that suited the period interior, we carefully removed the old unit and prepared the fireplace for installation.
A key part of the job was repairing the cracked chair brick — a supporting element at the base of the flue. Once repaired, we carried out a full smoke test to ensure the system was safe, sealed, and working properly. This is essential for any gas fire installation to meet Gas Safe regulations and protect occupants from potential risks.

Chimney Completion & Client Outcome
The new fire was successfully installed, with the entire flue system now secure, clean, and fully operational. The flue lining and bird guard ensure long-term safety, and the external concrete work offers better weather resistance going forward.
The homeowners were delighted with the results — especially knowing their lovely Labrador could enjoy a warm and safe home without risk of chimney issues. The work respected the age of the property while upgrading the heating system to modern standards. Another safe, tidy, and thoughtful installation from the DSS Heating and Plumbing team.
